After having a strong showing at their last tryout in Sacramento, Caitlan Albinson-Cruz, Jaybree Lopez and Valeria Rios have all been invited to participate in a training at the U.S. Soccer Training Center in Dublin, CA. to be held on Wednesday, Aprill 11, 2012.
Story was published in the Porterville Recorder on March 31, 2012.
The South Valley Chivas Academy of Porterville is becoming an early staging ground of sorts for players who have aspirations of playing soccer at the national level.
Three more girls from the academy have been chosen to take part in tryouts for the U.S. Women’s Youth National Soccer Teams, bringing the academy’s total to six
players who have received invitations for tryouts to be possibly considered for the national team.

On Sunday, Valeria Rios, Jaybree Lopez and Caitlin Albinson-Cruz will all perform for national scouts during tryouts on Sunday in Sacramento. Even though the three girls are all just 13, they will be trying out on the 15 and under level.
The tryout is operated by the U.S. Soccer Federation which governs all of the national teams, including the Olympic Development Program.
The other program that’s used to find talent on the national level is the ID2 program operated by U.S. Club Soccer and Lopez and Rios have also be chosen to participate in an ID2 camp to be held April 19-22 at UC Irvine.
Rios, a seventh grader at St. Anne’s School, is a defender and midfielder. “They have helped me a lot to do my footwork,” said Rios about how the academy has helped her. “I’ve been working a lot of the team with them.”
Rios, who has been playing soccer for nine years and has been with the academy for seven years, said she’ll focus on her footwork at the tryouts. “To do better in my footwork and to try my hardes,” said Rios about her goals at the tryouts.Lopez, a seventh grader at Rockford Elementary School, is also a midfielder and defender. “All of what I’ve learned has been from them,” said Lopez about the Chivas.Caitlin, a seventh grader at Burton Middle School, is a goaltender and has been playing soccer for 9 1/2 years. “They have helped me improve and taught me what I need to know,” said Caitlin about the Chivas.Wendy Lopez, Jabree’s mother, said the academy has made her daughter more determined. “Everything,” said Lopez about what the Chivas have meant to her daughter.
“She’s a real determined kid,” Lopez also said about her daughter, who carries a 4.0 grade point average. “She’s worked to dedicate this year to see what it’s going to take so she can get to the next level. She’s doing some extra training and stuff to take it to the next level.”
Veronica Cruz, Caitlin’s mother, and Jose Rios, Valeria’s father, said the Chivas have given their daughters the confidence and discipline to succeed.
Wendy Lopez summed it up best when she said the Chivas, “allow the kids to have dreams. That high goals are attainable with hard work.”

About two months ago, a local soccer coach here from the area, had the tenacity to argue the fact that a group of girls ages 11-12 could no longer be developed any further as they had already reached the peak of their soccer development.
Having attended numerous professional soccer club seminars, youth soccer coaching clinics and even the priviledge to have had numerous conversation with well known colleigate, professional and national coaches, I personally knew this was nonsense and this coach had no idea of what he was truely talking about.
Just last year the US Soccer Federation published a Coaching Curriculum which clearly details out all the player stages (Initial, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced State) and clearly states that a 12 year old youth soccer player is at the beginning of Intermediate Stage and clearly has alot to learn! At this age Tactical training plays an important role in the development of the youth soccer player. Group attacking and defending are very crucial at this stage as your practices should be geared more for “team” play instead of individual. The concept of “team” plays important part of this stage.
The following are a couple of supporting graphic which have been pulled straighout of out of the curriculum which clearly state the stages of development by age group:
In ending, I would like to invite all players, parents and coaches to read “Part 3: Age Group Organization” of the 123 page curriculum which can be found at the following link:
We would like to thank all the players and parents who participated in our tryout. The following is a list of players who were selected from the participants.

Porterville’s South Valley Chivas Academy continues to produce young players who are catching the eyes of United States National Soccer scouts as the academy has had two male players in invited to participate in U.S. National Soccer training center events in Dublin and San Ramon.Sergio Reyes and Oscar Torres were invited to the training centers. The 12-year-old Reyes of Porterville participated in a training center for players born in 1999 last week and received high marks from national head scout Hugo Perez.
Torres of Earlimart will participate in the training center on Wednesday in San Ramon with a chance to impress national scouts that could lead to a potential spot on the U.S. National 17 and under team.
Training centers are single day, invitational only training sessions run
Sergio Reyes with Hugo Perez
by U.S. Soccer staff for elite players in key soccer markets. The purpose of the training center program is to identify players for the U.S. Youth National Team.
Approximately 200 training center sessions have been scheduled in more than 30 soccer markets across the country for 2010-2011. There are 22-26 players at each training center.
Both Reyes and Torres said without the Chivas Academy under head coaches Esmaldo and Gilbert Hernandez, their success wouldn’t have been possible.
Reyes’ father, Pedro, agreed saying, “he’s been playing (soccer) since I can remember,” about his son. Reyes said along with his son’s dedication, his son’s success is due to “mostly the great expertise of the Chivas Academy. (We) owe it to mostly to them and the instruction of the academy.”
South Valley Chivas Academy will be switching their academy trainings to Mondays and Wednesday, 6-8pm at Summit Charter Collegiate Academy starting Monday, February 28, 2011.
On Friday, January 28 - Sunday, January 30, 2011, the “Gringos At The Gates” filming crew converged on Porterville to film footage of the South Valley Chivas Academy staff and players which will be included in the soccer documentary which focuses on the soccer rivalry between the USA and Mexico National Soccer Teams.
Because of the South Valley Chivas Academy involvement with both the Mexican National Youth Soccer Teams and the US National Youth Soccer Teams and being an official affliated academy of both Chivas USA and Chivas Guadalajara the academy was recommended to the documentary’s producers Pablo Miralles and Michael T. Whalen.
Excerpt from the “Gringos At The Gates” website
“From across the only shared border of third and first world countries, two vastly
different worlds collide on the soccer field. History has been kind to the financially
rich, socially dominant and politically powerful Americans. Not so much for their
southern neighbors, with nearly half of its population living in poverty. For two
centuries Mexico took a backseat to the nation to the north. This was true
everywhere… except in one place – the only place where Mexico and its people
could show its powerful neighbor that they were boss. Fútbol, or as the “yanquis”
call it, soccer. Now, in the 21st century, the balance of soccer power is beginning
to shift in the US’s favor, wounding the pride of an entire nation.

Aspe, Leonardo Cuellar & Ricardo Pelaez. Soccer analyst Nick Webster and
